The ONE Newsletter | Why New Agents Fail: #4: They Don't Have Patience

Sent by Michael Opyd | 10.8.25

ONE LESSON

Around the third year of my career, I was working as an independent agent when a lender I knew came to me with a proposal. We had built a good rapport, and he wanted to help me build my business, so he offered to split Zillow and Trulia ads with me. At this time, I did not have a lot of money, but I thought it was worth giving a shot based on what we spoke about and the research I did. I bought in, but after spending a few hundred dollars and not seeing immediate results, I changed my mind and withdrew from our agreement. At the time, to me it seemed like a waste of money, but time would prove me wrong.

LESSON LEARNED: If you have done the research and believe it will work, let it run its course before stopping.

A few years later, an agent I knew asked me to join a team he was forming. As we spoke about his business and why he was ready to expand, he explained how he built his business on Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com ads.

As he spoke, reality hit me like a right hook from Mike Tyson. I could have been where this person was IF I had just had the patience to let the ads from a few years prior play out. I could have sped up my learning curve and success instead of having to join his team to do so. A lesson I still carry with me to this day.

ONE TIP

Don’t think in days, think in months and years. Most people only look at the next day (or few days). They expect success to come quickly, and when these days go by, they begin to get frustrated. If you have a longer mentality, you allow yourself more time to succeed, which alleviates stress and gives you space to grow.

ONE QUOTE

Famed inventor Benjamin Franklin, on patience:

“He that can have patience can have what he will.”

ONE QUESTION

What have you quit on too early that might be worth giving a second chance?

Think about things you tried in the past. Was there business or some sort of marketing you tried but possibly gave up on too quickly? We all have things we feel aren’t working and quit, only to see others do the same thing but have success. The main difference is that those people gave it time. What are you not giving time to?
