ONE LESSON

Earlier in my career, I was taught the importance of regularly marketing to my database. Throughout my sales career, I would send a monthly real estate newsletter, a monthly postcard, and a quarterly email to my database. About 5-6 years in, I wanted to increase my business, so I started to look into how I could do this. I knew a bunch of agents who cold-called FSBOs, so I figured this was something I could do as well. I decided to commit one full week to calling at least three every morning. I stopped after the second day. I couldn’t stand it, and dreaded every call I made.

LESSON LEARNED: Do what you enjoy, or you won’t do it

Studying people as long as I have, I have found that to do anything, you have to want to do it. You must enjoy it (or you have convinced yourself, by creating enough leverage against yourself), or you will find every excuse not to do it. If you are not sure what marketing to do, look at yourself and ask what you enjoy (or know you can commit to), and then focus on doing it. For example, I enjoy creating and sending newsletters (obviously), so I have continued to do this throughout my career. Find what you enjoy and it double down on it!
