The ONE Newsletter | Be Thankful for What You Have

ONE LESSON

A while ago, I had a close friend lose his father. My friend was in his 20s at the time, and his death took all of us by surprise, especially my friend’s mother and his two sisters. When it happened, I could see the pain in their faces and how much that man meant to all of them. As time went on, it was interesting to see how the four of them chose to continue living their lives. My friend’s mom never remarried but found solace in dedicating her life to helping others, and his sisters both found wonderful partners, had children, and are continuing to enjoy their lives. My friend chose alcohol, lives with his mother, jumps from crappy job to crappy job, and has never moved on from his father’s death.

LESSON LEARNED: Life is short; be thankful for the time you have.

If you are blessed to live long enough, you will likely see people you know and care about leave this Earth. Although our society considers it taboo to talk about, death is inevitable. Every one of us will eventually return to dust one day. We don’t know when our time will come, so why waste any of it? The more you are thankful and appreciate the time you have, the better life you are going to live.

So please be thankful for the time you have because you never know when it is going to run out.

ONE TIP

Make a list of everything you are thankful for and review it daily. Our world focuses so much on the negatives. News, articles, and radio are all vying for your attention, and they know the best way to get it is to lean on negative topics because, psychologically, they get more clicks than positive topics. We have to be intentional about surrounding ourselves with positivity. The best way to do this is to remind ourselves daily of all the good we have in our lives.

I do this in the shower. I think about all of the things I am grateful and it always leaves me with a smile on my face, even when I know the day ahead of me is going to be a challenging one.

ONE QUOTE

Actress, producer, author, talk show host, and media proprietor Oprah Winfrey, on thankfulness:

"Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough."

ONE QUESTION

What are you thankful for?

Regardless of the challenges you have faced (or are facing) in your life, there are still bright spots all around you. You just have to look for them 🙂
