The ONE Newsletter | Why New Agents Fail: #5: They Don't Understand Time

Sent by Michael Opyd | 10.1.25

ONE LESSON

The beginning of my career was very challenging. I didn’t have a sale until my third year, so time was constantly on my mind. Every day, I would go through a range of emotions. From frustrations, to pain, to doubt, most were negative, and it was a constant battle with my mind on whether to keep going or quit. I focused a lot of my thoughts on how long things were taking. Like most people, I wanted things to happen quickly, and they weren’t. This was further emphasized by my first sale, which was a short sale that took NINE months to close. Then, two more weeks passed before I finally got paid. I had a general idea that real estate was a slower-moving industry. I just wasn’t aware how slow it really was.

LESSON LEARNED: Focus on what you can control, and the future will take care of itself.

When I was trekking through the early part of my career, I spent a lot of time thinking about my past and whether I should go back to it. But I spent more time on the fantasy of a future created in my mind based on shows I watched, videos, social media, and movies. A fantasy of wealth and an easy lifestyle built overnight with no effort. Reality was the slap in the face I needed. When I learned to ignore those thoughts and focus on what I control, a more realistic timeframe of my future appeared, and each day my future became more of a reality.

ONE TIP

Live in the moment. The past can’t be changed, and we don’t know what will happen in the future. All we can control is this moment right now. The more you focus on what you can control, the more the outcome will be what you want.

ONE QUOTE

Renaissance painter Leonardo de Vinci, on using time:

“Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it.”

ONE QUESTION

What are you missing right now by focusing too much on the past and/or future?

When you are lost in thought on things you cannot control, you miss opportunities that could benefit you. Think about what you are focusing on. Is it keeping you from not only enjoying the present but also from creating the future you want? Your future self is a reflection of what you focus on in the present.
