ONE LESSON
My first brokerage did not have any education for agents. The office I was at was full of veteran agents who were already established, and the Managing Broker was more interested in her own business than in teaching a new agent anything. This forced me to learn on my own. I would rely on my cousin for guidance and spend the rest of the time learning on my own. This was very challenging since there is so much to learn when you first start a career in real estate. Trying to learn as much as possible as fast as possible led me to try learning everything all at once. This approach meant that I wasn’t able to get a deep understanding of things and only had a surface-level education. Ultimately, it affected my progress, causing me to have a longer learning curve
LESSON LEARNED: A singular focus allows the mind to learn more quickly.
Like most agents, when I entered the real estate industry, I was completely overwhelmed trying to learn everything. I thought I needed to learn it all at once and did my best to do so. But you cannot learn everything at once. Our minds are not wired this way. Our minds anchor a topic and pile additional similar information on top of it. The more we pile on, the more we retain. My approach might have created an anchor immediately, but without piling more information on top, it was harder for me to retain much of it. It wasn’t until later in my career that I realized the power of having a singular focus on one topic. When you focus on one topic at a time, you learn more quickly since your brain is only concerned about that one topic and is not pulled in other directions.
ONE TIP
Go all in on your topic. When you want to learn about a topic, put all of your focus on learning as much as possible about it. This means not researching any other topics at the same time. Only focus on your main topic. When you do this, your mind will connect the dots, and it will be easier to learn faster.
ONE QUOTE
British writer C.S. Lewis, on the benefits of learning:
“The only people who achieve much are those who want knowledge.”
ONE QUESTION
What could you study to separate yourself from everyone else?
The best way to separate yourself from everyone else is to know more than everyone else. Most agents understand the basic topics, but few venture outside the normal education. When you know what others don’t, you excel where others can’t.
